A traditional historic pub with a real fire, sofas, board games and in the rear a pool table and dartboard. It is popular for regular live music. Openign hours may vary from time to time and visitors may wish to confirm them with the pub. In addition, the pub is open for midweek Ipswich Town home games. The pub offers various seating areas including an outside patio and garden. Although the building has been a pub "only" since about 1689, it was standing for some time before that; local historians believe that Thomas Wolsey was born here, or close to here, in approximately 1473. It is believed to be the oldest pub of this name in East Anglia.
